Internet Mobility and the Future
With the rapid growth of portable devices such as smart phones, tablets and wireless technologies, supporting Internet mobility has become a very important issue now and will continue to be an important issue into the future.
Today, the majority of the world’s population has the potential to be mobile. This mobility is changing the way consumers connect to the Internet and increasing the demand for IP addresses.
These changes were taking place at the time the unallocated IPv4 address pool reached its limit. The last large blocks of free IPv4 addresses were assigned in February 2011. The Regional Internet Registries are now in their final stages of IPv4 exhaustion while IPv6 address requests increase, but not at the same rate as mobile Internet deployment.
The speakers of this plenary will discuss the impacts of growing numbers of mobile devices with the ever increasing demand for IP addresses and the future direction of Internet mobility.
