How Wireless Data Radios can be used to provide Internet Access by: Dewayne Hendricks [dewayne@warpspeed.com] In the past two years there have been great strides in the wireless data industry which has resulted in products which have much higher datarates and lower price points then ever before. These products can provide wireless data communications either over LAN or MAN coverage areas. This now offers ISP's new options as to how to they can provide affordable high-speed Internet access to customers in their service area. This talk will review the results of a two and a half year US National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research project which has studied how these devices can be used to deliver Internet access to educational institutations in both urban and rural areas in the United States. The focus of the discussion will be to examine the issues involved in using wireless data devices to provide Internet access in contrast to using wireline alternatives. Also insights will be provided as to how ISP's can go about successfully deploying wireless data devices in both urban and rural areas to solve last-mile connectivity issues. |

Common Misunderstanding of Multilingual Issues by: Masataka Ohta While the multilingual and character set issues are highly cultural and are not easy to understand, there are widely spread but simple technical misunderstandings on the issue, which makes the understanding even more difficult. For example, there is a confusion that multilingual processing needs multiple character sets or multiscript processing, even though all the languages in the world can be written with ASCII characters only. The other example is that, sometimes, localization is often against the internationalization. The reality is that localization of DNS or URL names to include local characters in them is to limit the scope of the names locally and is against the internationalization. The talk identifies various misunderstandings to help to identify the essential cultural issues of multilingual and multiscript processing. |
