N. Ravi Shanker is the Joint Secretary, Department of Information Technology (DIT), Government of India and Chief Executive Officer of National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) with effect from 6th September, 2007.
In DIT, his responsibilities are in the area of e-Learning, e-Infrastructure and Internet Governance.
The activities of NIXI are:
- NIXI is the sole neutral Internet exchange for ISPs in India. It has in all 7 exchange points in the country – Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad; with traffic of approximately over 7.5 Gbps.
- Operating the .IN Registry (IDNccTLD) in India. The .IN Registry has over 5,80,000 domain names registry as on date.
NIXI plans to operate the National Internet Registry (NIR) in India and has been granted in principle approval for the same.
N. Ravi Shanker is a Member of the Indian Administrative Service with nearly 30 years of experience in Public Administration and Public Policy Management.
He graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor in Engineering (Electrical & Electronics Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
He is the Country Representative on the Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). He coordinated the hosting of the 3rd IGF at Hyderabad in December, 2008.
He is the Country Representative of the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) of ICANN with effect from September, 2007. He coordinated the organizing of the ICANN's 31st International Public Meeting in New Delhi in February, 2008.
