Advancing the Philippines' Internet Infrastructure PDF Print

William Torres, Ph.D.

Abstract:

Since the advent of the World Wide Web in the early 1990's there has been a dramatic and continuing increase in the demand for more sophisticated Internet services.  While the more advanced countries have invested aggressively in establishing their Internet infrastructures, together with the other relevant resources, in order to meet thisdemand, the developing countries (like the Philippines), unfortunately, lag behind in developing theirs. This state of affairs is not necessarily due to lack of financial resources; I believe that it is because government and business leaders have yet to fully appreciate the value of the Internet to a country's social and economic development.

Towards improving the Philippines' Internet infrastructure, this presentation will briefly describe its current status and point out the important components that need to be deployed or strengthened, e.g., Internet Exchange Points, Content Delivery Networks.
