APRICOT 2001 TO SPUR INTERNET TECHNOLOGY EXPLOSION IN MALAYSIA
KUALA LUMPUR, 12 December 2000
Malaysia which is hosting the Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) 2001 will stand to gain much from the event which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from 26 February to 2 March 2001.
"Previous hosts of APRICOT have enjoyed outstanding growth after the events were held in their cities. Singapore and South Korea saw an explosion and a plethora of Internet activities, and history will repeat itself for APRICOT 2001 in Kuala Lumpur and for Malaysia.
"The local Internet Service Provider business and Internet industry will benefit greatly from the hosting of APRICOT. The local ISP business has seen much activity since other providers have started their operations and this will greatly increase the need for more engineers trained in Internet technologies. The hosting of APRICOT in Malaysia will be timely as it will help meet this great need," said PIKOM Chairman Wendy Liew.
APRICOT is a forum that facilitates knowledge-sharing among key Internet builders in the region, with peers and leaders from the Internet community worldwide.
Since 1996, APRICOT has established itself as the region's premier regional international summit where related organisations congregate and host their annual general meeting amidst other special events.
APRICOT 2001 is hosted by the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia as well as PIKOM.
The event is expected to be attended by 600 participants from Malaysia and from abroad.
Internet personalities such as David S Isenberg and Anders Comstedt have been confirmed as key speakers.
"We are confirming both their topics and are contacting other technology leaders of the Internet so as to provide participants with varied, exciting and current issues.
"We welcome speakers to send in their papers and topics for consideration. Further information can also be obtained from our website, www.apricot2001.net or from PIKOM," said Wendy.
"We would like to call on all Malaysian Internet players to attend APRICOT 2001 as it is virtually on home turf".
"Developments in worldwide, regional and especially Malaysian e-commerce point us to an exploding field. A recent projection by Gartner Group Inc says that growing Internet use will lead to booming e-commerce revenue outside the US in the fourth quarter of this year by 85.5 per cent to US$19.5 billion from US$10.53 billion," she added.
The summit comprises two days of tutorials and two days of conference, including birds of feather meetings, AP* meetings and social activities. Some of the topics presented in the past include Policy and Internet Security, Encryption, Firewall, Spamming, Domain Name System, Internet Regulation and Policy, Internet Protocol 6, ATM, Switches and Routers, Satellite and Wireless Technologies for the Internet, Virtual Private Networks and Extranets, VOIP, ISDN, xDSL and Broadband Internet.
