FIRST EVER IN APRICOT - IPv4/IPv6 Dual Stack Internet
The APRICOT 2004 conference in Kuala Lumpur,
hosted by PIKOM and supported by the Ministry of Energy, Communications
and Multimedia and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission will be the first such meet to offer IPv4/IPv6 dual
stack Internet connectivity.
This network will be offered both via wired
and wireless access technologies for the participants to use throughout
the duration of the conference. The introduction of IPv4/IPv6
dual stack connectivity, during this regional Internet conference
on operational technologies, will be an important one, as network
operators worldwide are starting to actively evaluate and deploy
this next-generation Internet protocol technology.
IPv6, which has been developed and worked on
by the IETF since 1993, has reached some level of maturity and
is ready to be deployed via the numerous transition mechanisms
available. IPv6 addresses the limitations of IPv4, including the
depleting number of available global IP addresses, provides inherent
security features, improved quality of service, mobility support,
plug and play configuration and other future-proofing extensions.
Network operators are seeing the exponential growth of broadband
access, interconnectivity of non-PC devices, peer-to-peer applications,
mission-critical VPNs, and ubiquitous communications as current
trends. With these in mind, the transition to IPv6 is seen as
essential step for these environments. This especially, as the
industry progresses onto a convergent communications world to
include voice, video and data into one seamless unified IP network.
As part of the APRICOT 2004 conference, the
Asia-Pacific IPv6 Task Force will hold their second regional meeting
as a conference session on the 26th of February. In addition to
this, there will also be IPv6 showcases from the IPv6 Promotion
Council of Japan and the NCA, Taiwan. IPv6 connectivity throughout
the event is provided by NTT MSC as part of the NTT/Verio IPv6
Global IP Network.
